The general rule of thumb is that a double-breasted jacket can best compliment a tall mans figure, while shorter men look better in a single-breasted jacket. When in doubt about which style of tux to pick the best style for the Groom, after all, it is His Day!

Note: Having everyone wear the same tuxedo style (single breasted or double breasted) is nice, but not mandatory. Some members of the wedding party, usually the Father of the Bride or Father of the Groom may already own a tuxedo, so be prepared to work with that.

If you have questions about any of this, ask the sales person at the tux shop and they will help you.

FYI - you can't go wrong with white, pleated, French cuffs, with a lay down collar.

TUXEDO CUMMERBUND OR VEST

Here is your chance to make a personal statement. To most affairs, it is acceptable to pair a tie with a cummerbund or vest. A cummerbund is that large oversized silk belt-looking thing that is worn around the waist over the top of the tux pants and the bottom of the tux shirt. You can select the color and style of your choice in this area, black is always safe and traditional. However, the bride may ask the men in the wedding party to coordinate on color of the vest, cummerbund or tie. This way the Groom, FOB and FOG, and the groomsmen would have splash of color that would accent and tie in with the bridal colors.

Grooms, FOB, FOG, and groomsmen often ask the question: "Which way do the cummerbunds pleats face: Up or Down?"

The correct answer is the cummerbund's pleats always face UP. Note please, if you have decided on a Vest, you will Not wear a cummerbund with the vest.

There is no such thing as a typical Indian wedding. Surprised? That's because in this land of diverse languages and traditions, wedding customs are equally varied.

Here's a look at how people residing in the eastern and western regions of India celebrate weddings.

Eastern Indian wedding ceremonies are not as opulent and extravagant as their North Indian counterparts but are equally elaborate in their own way. There are scores of simple but meaningful rituals, many of them very interesting and actually rooted in ancient logic and reasoning. Weddings in India are also an occasion where long-lost close friends and relatives bond and share memorable moments during this happy occasion.

The most striking feature of a Bengali wedding, however, is the fact that the groom's mother does not attend the wedding! She awaits the happy couple at home, ready to perform all the welcoming rituals.

A typical East Indian groom is traditionally clad in dhoti and kurta, and he carries a mirror all the time right till wedding ceremony is over. The groom's party is accorded a welcome with fresh flowers and much blowing of conches by the womenfolk. Rosewater is sprinkled on him and then both, the bride and the groom get ready for the actual nuptials. The bride is beautifully dressed in a heavy red Benarasi saree and wears a kind of a crown like a princess. She has sandalwood paste decorations on her forehead and face

As a part of the wedding ritual, the bride has to sit on a low wooden stool called pidi that is lifted by her brothers. The bride is then taken around the groom seven times in circles by her brothers, signifying their eternal union. Interestingly, all along she shields her eyes from the groom with a betel leaf. The bride then proceeds to sit on a highly decorated pidi (low wooden stools), similar to the one on which the groom is seated, all through the chanting of the priest. The women folk gathered blow conch shells to mark this highly auspicious moment.

This is followed by the exchange of flower garlands between the bride and groom, to the accompaniment of the chanting if scared mantras (Sanskrit verses). The bride and groom again take seven steps around the sacred fire. The groom then applies vermillion onto his bride's head, the symbol of a married woman. After this, the bride is handed over to the groom by her maternal or paternal uncle.

The newlyweds reach the groom's home where more rituals and ceremonies follow. Hiding the rings of the bride and groom, playing with a vessel full of rice are some of the wedding games to make the new bride feel at home.

Interestingly, the married couple has to stay separately that night and it is only the next night, after all the rituals have finally been completed that they can enjoy conjugal bliss!

West Indian marriages

Western Indian weddings, especially Maharashtrian weddings, usually take place in the morning. Prior to this, the engagement ceremony, known as Sakhar Puda (exchanging of a sugar packet) takes place to formally declare the betrothal.

In the morning, a puja is conducted to worship Lord Ganesh (the elephant-headed God of prosperity). The groom's family arrives in the morning at either the bride's residence or the mandap and is treated to a lavish breakfast.

After this, as per the auspicious time already set in consultation with various astrological almanacs, the girl's maternal uncle escorts her to the Mandap (marriage hall). Tradition dictates that the girl and boy do not see each other while the Antarpaat ceremony takes place. In this a silk partition (Antarpaat) is placed between them. Then the shlokas are chanted by the priest after which Antarpaat is removed. The friends and relatives gathered shower unbroken rice on the couple as an auspicious sign. The bride and the groom then exchange flower garlands and take the Seven Steps (Saat Pheras) around the ceremonial holy fire.

After the marriage ceremony, another puja, known as Laxmi Narayan puja, is held, in which the bride and groom are symbolically worshipped as Goddess Lakshmi (the Goddess of Wealth) and Lord Narayan, respectively. Like in all Indian weddings, the girl is then formally 'handed over' to the groom by her father or maternal uncle. This ceremony is known as Kanya Daan all across India.

Gujarati wedding ceremonies also begin by offering prayers to Lord Ganesha and seeking his blessings. Traditionally, the bride and the groom exchange Jaimala or flower garlands twice. The first time round, the groom is made to sit on a higher platform than the bride, symbolizing that the bride has not broken his ties with his friends and family. The second time, they are at an equal level. In what is known as the Madhuparka ceremony, the groom's feet are washed and he is plied with honey and milk. Even as this ceremony is in progress, the bride's sisters and cousins attempt to steal the groom's shoes, a tradition that is followed in almost all the Indian marriages. There is much laughter and good-natured teasing. The groom has to 'bribe' these girls with handsome financial benefits in order to get his footwear back!

Then comes the tying of the groom's shawl to the bride's sari, readying them to take the customary Seven Steps around the sacred fire - the central part of all Indian weddings. The couple walks seven times around the sacred fire, taking their seven vows, to the accompaniment of the mantras being chanted by the presiding priest. Formally married, the couple seeks the blessings of their parents and other elders. This concludes the wedding which is followed by a grand and lavish reception party.

Traditions and customs form the backbone of an Indian wedding. It is rich, colourful and vibrant, hiding a wealth of meaning in its many interesting and, sometimes perplexing, customs that have their roots in its ancient heritage.

Then string some white pearls and sew around the edge of the hearts. Last you can glue some other pearls and ribbon roses on the shoes themselves randomly. This same idea could be used on stilettos, or flats, or for that matter any shoe you choose. You can add as little or as much as you like.

Another great thing to do that is very easy, is to buy some antique rhinestone clip on earrings. Most antique stores have an abundance of these and you usually can find some great deals. Garage sale are another great place to find costume jewelry that could be used for this purpose. Again you could put a bow on the shoe and clip the earring to the center. You can also glue some rhinestones or Swarovski crystals to the shoe in a design of your choice.

Consider gluing appliques, vintage lace, ribbon and flowers to shoes to make them look totally fabulous and definitely one of a kind. The possibilities are endless--just use your imagination!

1. India. A very traditional custom is for the bride's sisters and cousins to hide the groom's shoes when he arrives at their house for the wedding. It is a battle of wits and ingenuity between the bride's family, that does its best to steal the shoes, and the groom's family that tries to protect them at all costs. There is much laughter and teasing. If the bride's relatives succeed in stealing the shoes, the poor groom has to shell out whatever amount the girls demand to get his footwear back.

2. Scotland. Perhaps the honour for the weirdest wedding custom goes to Scotland where 'Blackening the bride' is practised as an important pre-wedding ritual. Of course, the poor bride has absolutely no idea just when she will be bombarded with the foulest of substances - she is taken totally by surprise. Her friends throw black liquid, eggs, sauces and any other revolting substance they can lay their hands on. The ordeal doesn't end here. After being blackened, the bride-to-be is paraded all through town!

3. Germany. Shattering a large number of porcelain or glass dishes prior to the wedding is a long-held German tradition. The bride and groom have to clean up the mess themselves. The belief behind this seemingly destructive act is that it will bring the couple good luck. Another custom more common in the villages of Germany is 'kidnapping the bride' by friends of both, the bride and the groom, and having the groom to hunt for her. The third custom is 'log sawing' in which a log is placed between two sawhorses and both the newlyweds have to work together to saw it in half.

4. Poland. In keeping with an ancient Polish tradition, the groom and his parents arrive at the bride's house before the wedding, where both sets of parents bless the couple. Another quaint old custom is to prepare 'passing gates' that leads to the reception venue for the newlyweds. The couple has to 'bribe' their way through by offering vodka to the 'gate keepers'. At the reception gate, the newlywed couple is accorded a warm welcome by the parents with the traditional bread and salt. While the bread signifies prosperity, salt represents hardship of life which the couple will face together.

5. Sweden. There are two customs that dominate a Swedish wedding - coins in the bride's shoes and kissing the guests. Her father places a silver coin in her left shoe while a gold coin from her mother is placed in her right shoe, symbolising that she will never be in want. At the wedding reception, the guests await an opportunity to kiss either the bride or the groom, sometimes both of the stars are favourable! If the groom goes out of the room for a while, all the male guests get to kiss the bride, and vice versa - all in a queue though.

6. France. The French have a wedding night prank that goes by the name of 'Chiverie'. In this, the friends and relatives of the newly weds gather outside their room and get busy clanging and banging assorted pots and pans. The din is intended to disturb the resting couple, and have them come out in their wedding attire. They are then expected to provide refreshments to the 'trespassers'.

Chinese Wedding Customs 1 - Pre-wedding Day

Selection of auspicious dates 看日子

Auspicious dates are required for the chinese wedding, the betrothal and installation of the bridal bed. A chinese monk, a temple official or a fortune teller are able to advice on a suitable date based on the couple's birth dates and times. Some may also refer to the chinese calendar or almanac for good days. Usually, even numbered months and dates are preferred and the lunar seventh month is avoided as it is the month of the Hungry Ghost Festival.

Bridal Shoes

After the selection of the auspicious dates, wedding details such as types and quantities of betrothal gifts, return gifts, bride's price 娉金, and number of tables at the wedding banquet provided by the groom's parents for the bride's parents' guest are agreed.

Betrothal 过大礼/纳彩

Up to a month and at least three days before the wedding day, the groom and a friend or a matchmaker will deliver the betrothal gifts on the auspicious date chosen.

Western and chinese wedding cakes, peanut candies, together with two bottles of brandy, at least six tins of canned pork legs and even number of oranges are included in the wedding gift baskets. Two pairs of dragon and phoenix candles 龙凤烛are also included. Also included is gold jewellery from the groom's parents to the bride such as the cantonese's dragon and phoenix bangle 龙凤琢 or the teochew's four items of gold四点金.

Some include the bride's price with the betrothal gifts whereas some will only present it when the groom fetches the bride.

In the return gifts, the 2 bottles of brandy will be replaced with 2 bottles of orange syrup. An even numbered portion of all the other gifts are returned to the groom's family together with the 2 phoenix candles. The bride's side will light the 2 dragon candles and the groom's side the phoenix candles on the morning of the wedding day.

Some hokkien family will also request for a bunch of bananas and red dates to be included in the return gifts. A red packet for the groom's parents to buy shoes is required. The bride will also present towels to the parents, grandparents, aunt, uncles and groom's siblings.

After the betrothal, the chinese wedding invitations are distributed.
